Designing for the End - MA Live Brief, 2024
Project type
Live brief, Illustration, Ceramic, Jewellery
Date
2024
Location
Sheffield
Designing for the End was my main project for the second trimester of the MA Design (Illustration), created in response to a live brief working with St Luke’s Hospice - a Sheffield-based charity offering palliative care and support.
I used illustration to explore how we talk about death and grief today, drawing from historical mourning practices like memento mori and Victorian keepsakes, while reworking them through a more personal, playful, and contemporary lens. The project reflects my interest in sentimentality, symbolism, and the emotional weight of physical objects, particularly at a time when digital memorials are becoming more common.
By making tactile, hand-crafted pieces - from greetings cards and paintings to jewellery and pocket shrines - I wanted to create things that carry memory in lasting, material ways.
